Hey Mindfulness Tribe!
Ready to turn your worst days into your biggest strengths?
This week, MTM takes a wild ride with Brett Cotter, the genius behind Stress is Gone and the author of Three Keys to Managing PTSD.
Here are the top takeaways from this episode:
Transforming Trauma at the Cellular Level
Brett's approach to healing trauma is all about getting to the root—literally. He breaks down how trauma is stored in our cellular memory, messing with us at our deepest level.
His techniques? "When you get to the original trauma and bring in unconditional love, it changes from constriction to expansion, and we're free of it," says Brett.
It will take some time to develop this necessary unconditional love and once you do you will transform your entire being from the bottom up.
Stress Stopper Breathwork: Your New Best Friend
You know that we love breathing practices. Well Brett taught us another one that you can add to your tool kit: the Stress Stopper Breathwork.
It’s simple! Here is the recipe:
When you are feeling stressed out stop and take a moment and be with the experience.
Scan your body and locate where the stress-tension is and place your hand on that spot.
Then take a several slow deep breaths and silently repeat to yourself, meaningfully, "I'm okay." with every passing exhale.
Repeat this process until the tension melts away.
I know that this tool might sound a little too simplistic but instead of judging it, try it and experience how powerful this technique is in changing your emotional state.
Generational Trauma is Real, Folks!
Yes we get into some pretty heavy stuff in this episode. Generational trauma, also known as intergenerational trauma, refers to the transmission of trauma from one generation to the next.
This type of trauma often stems from significant historical events such as war, genocide, slavery, and systemic oppression, as well as personal experiences of abuse and neglect. The symptoms vary considerably and manifest as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health issues, affecting not just individuals but entire families and communities.
Brett states "We are marionette puppets to all of the reactions programmed into our DNA," and then speak of several techniques he teaches that have proven to cut those strings and set you free from the invisible chains of generational pain.
Powerful stuff!!
Suicide Prevention:
Compassion, Presence, and Relaxation
Brett's CPR (Compassion, Presence, and Relaxation) for suicidal ideation is a lifesaver—literally. When helping someone through those dark moments practicing compassion, remaining present, and relaxation are essential.
He trains crisis counselors to listen without judgment and help the suffering callers release their emotional pain.
Brett advises, "Less is more. Listen, empathy, and sympathy. No judgment and no interruptions," It's all about creating a safe space for those in crisis, making them feel heard, loved and supported.
Love is the Answer
At the end of the day, Brett's central message is simple and profound:
Love is the answer.
Whether it's healing trauma or dealing with daily stress, bringing unconditional love into the equation makes all the difference.
So, what about approaching life with self love, compassion and acceptance, and experience the magic yourself?
